CBCs

Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) are annual winter bird censuses conducted by volunteers between mid-December and early January.  Historically, this tradition involved competitions to see who could kill the most birds, but in 1900, at the urging of the Audubon Society, observers began to count birds instead. This practice has spread, and such opportunities for enjoying a day of birding and contributing to ornithological research abound in our area. Counts cover a circular territory having a 15 mile (24 kilometer) diameter, with small parties covering specificly assigned areas within the circle over a 24 hour time period.  Observers are asked to submit a nominal fee to cover the costs of data compilation and publication.

Below is a listing of some of the CBCs held within the BOS coverage area.  Our calendar is updated annually with the specific dates and includes contact information for those who may wish to participate.  Volunteers are encouraged to contact the compiler for a CBC and get outside for a day of holiday birding!
