In the not-too-distant-past, Black Vulture was a true rarity in western NY and southern Ontario. The ongoing wintering population staging in Lewiston, NY continues to entertain winter birders. This photo was taken by Alan Bloom on the 9th at St. Peter’s RC Church in Lewiston - the well-known winter roost location for both species of vultures.

What a sight! Massive Snow Goose flocks such as this one are more regular in the eastern part of the BOS study area. Andrea Heine photographed these birds near Lyndonville, Orleans County on the 12th.

This group of 7 Cackling Geese includes an individual with the nice, neat and narrow necklace indicative of the Richardson’s Race. This group was photographed by Ryan Griffiths on the 5th in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Occasionally found overwintering, this Eastern Meadowlark is a sight for sore eyes in late winter. That splash of yellow would cheer Scrooge up! Gale VerHague snapped this shot on the 1st in the town of Sheridan, Chautauqua County.

This Whooper Swan has taken up residence at Barcelona Harbor, Chautauqua County since mid-February. The bird was determined to be an escape due to a damaged flight feather and its desire to be ‘up close and personal’ to people. Gale VerHague took this photo on the 6th.

Olean, NY has gotten in on the Evening Grosbeak action this winter. This bird was part of a 15-member flock visiting a feeder in the yard of Jennifer Miller who also took this photo.

Sue Barth photographed this male Pine Warbler using her backyard feeders in Orchard Park on the 21st. This species is a rare overwinterer and one of the first warbler migrants to arrive in the spring.

A few short decades ago, Sandhill Crane was a rarity in WNY and southern Ontario; now we have multiple breeding pairs scattered across the BOS study area. This bird was photographed by John Gordinier at Moss Lake Nature Sanctuary, Allegany County on the 28th.
